Protesters clashed with police outside Kosovo’s parliament over moves to limit the powers of a Hague war crimes court. Police responded with tear gas and water cannon.
Kosovo police used tear gas against protesters calling for restrictions on the war crimes court. Anger has grown since former president Hashim Thaci, regarded by many as a hero of the independence struggle, was sentenced last month for crimes committed during the 1990s war against Serbia.
Police clashed with several hundred protesters outside Kosovo’s Parliament in Pristina after lawmakers failed to complete a vote on changes limiting the powers of the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague. Tear gas and water cannons were used, and a hospital reported 12 injuries. The dispute over the court has become linked to negotiations over electing Kosovo’s next president.
