WHO official Maria Van Kerkhove said thousands of suspected plague cases are reported around the world each year. From 2019 to 2025, ten countries reported nearly 4,000 suspected human cases and 423 related deaths, including bubonic and pneumonic plague. She said the bacterial disease can be treated with antibiotics.
