A suspected case of pneumonic plague in Siberia has drawn attention to the disease after a young employee at a Russian institute studying plague and other dangerous infections died of severe pneumonia. Russian authorities told the World Health Organization that no plague case had been recorded in the region. Human cases are now rare and can usually be treated with antibiotics.
