PoliticsGermany shaken by espionage and treason scandal
Former BND chief August Hanning has been arrested and accused by federal prosecutors of espionage, treason and attempted treason. Prosecutors allege that his former chief of staff, Manfred D., passed him nearly 2,000 classified documents for money over several years, which Hanning used in his private consultancy and partly leaked to a foreign intelligence employee. The country involved has not been identified, though reports say it is not Russia.
