WorldFrench police detain 440 during high school student protests, interior minister says
French police detained 440 people, most of them minors, during protests near high schools, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said. About two-thirds were placed in custody. Forty-eight law enforcement officers were injured, including in seven incidents involving hydrochloric acid. The weeklong protests over curriculum, teacher shortages and other education problems have sometimes escalated into riots, arson and clashes with police.
