Malaysia has begun repatriating an initial group of nearly 1,500 Rohingya to Myanmar and says all returnees are volunteers whose safety is guaranteed. The UN and rights groups have criticised the move, arguing that long-running persecution and Myanmar’s civil war make those assurances meaningless. The government plans to return 5,000 Myanmar nationals.
