Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced his resignation on Sept. 27, enabling him to run for prime minister as the Serbian Progressive Party’s right-wing populist candidate in the Oct. 25 parliamentary election. Analysts say he would remain Serbia’s de facto most powerful figure if elected. Vucic has faced sustained anti-government protests since November 2025.
