European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU is opening the door for Canada to become its first associate member, a status that does not currently exist. In her State of the Union address, she described Europe and Canada as sharing views on issues including AI, climate change, the Arctic, geopolitics and democracy, amid an “openly hostile world.”
