China’s largest shield tunneling machine has rolled off the production line in Zhengzhou, central Henan Province. The domestically developed China Railway 1662 measures 16.68 meters in excavation diameter, is 125 meters long and weighs about 4,800 tonnes. Its atmospheric-pressure cutterhead and circulation-based debris-clearing system are designed to support safer operation in high water pressure and reduce the need for workers to enter the chamber.
