SciencePopular navigation apps unlikely to abandon Mercator maps despite UN resolution

The UN General Assembly has backed an African-led, nonbinding resolution promoting maps that represent continental size more accurately. It passed with 164 votes in favor and six abstentions, while the United States opposed it. The resolution encourages use of equal-area projections such as Equal Earth but does not require technology companies or navigation apps to change their maps.
