CultureRoman shipwreck carrying 500 amphorae found off Sicily

A Roman vessel dating back 2,100 years has been found beneath the sea off Mazara del Vallo in Sicily. The wreck lies about three miles from the coast at a depth of roughly 46 metres and contains around 500 amphorae. The ancient, narrow-necked ceramic jars are thought to have been used mainly for transporting wine. Italy’s Carabinieri cultural heritage police investigated the site with divers and underwater cameras after fishermen provided a tip. The discovery was hailed as one of the most important underwater archaeological finds in recent years.
