Government figures show the ongoing outbreak has killed more than 5,000 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with over 10,300 confirmed cases across eight of the country’s 26 provinces. It began in May and became the country’s deadliest outbreak in August. The epicentre is in conflict-hit Ituri province, complicating efforts to contain the virus; cases have also been confirmed in Uganda, Kenya and Nigeria. The Bundibugyo strain has no available vaccine or treatment, though clinical trials are under way.
