Christine Lagarde will leave the European Central Bank presidency on February 7, about nine months before her eight-year term was due to end. The early departure gives EU leaders time to choose a successor before France’s presidential election. A German European Parliament member warned that any impression the timing was linked to national elections could damage trust in the ECB.
