PoliticsSpain begins border checks on Italy over Ceuta dispute

Spain has begun checking travellers arriving from Italy in retaliation for similar restrictions introduced by Rome after a surge of migrants into Ceuta, Spain’s North African enclave. Madrid says most of those migrants were quickly returned and accuses Italy of permitting “persistent irregular migration”. The European Union describes the reciprocal restrictions as temporary. It says they will not have a lasting effect on the Schengen zone.
