ScienceSpaceX rocket debris expected to hit the moon and raise a plume of lunar dust
Debris from a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, roughly the size of a school bus and weighing about four metric tons, is expected to strike the moon. Cambridge astronomer Dr. Matt Bothwell says the impact could excavate a crater around 30 meters wide and send a major dust plume 50 to 100 kilometers upward. No lunar-orbiting spacecraft is expected to be positioned to record it in real time. Telescope observations from the Americas may take several hours to confirm the impact, which scientists say poses no cause for concern.
