The UN General Assembly voted Friday to move away from the 16th-century Mercator projection and adopt a map that more accurately represents the size of the continents. The resolution, led by several African countries and co-sponsored by France, won support from 164 countries. The US opposed it, while six others abstained.
The United Nations is backing an Africa-led effort to promote a fairer depiction of the world. Africa appears smaller on many of the maps most commonly used around the world.
