WorldIranian woman sentenced to death for ‘blasphemy’ in social media post

Rights groups say 23-year-old accounting student Najmeh Amini was sentenced to death over a social media post charged as insulting the prophet. She also received more than 12 years in a separate case and is held in Mashhad’s Vakilabad prison. The death sentence is not final and can be appealed to Iran’s supreme court. Rights groups say Iran has carried out at least 600 executions this year and warn authorities are increasingly using capital punishment to suppress dissent.
