SocietyChina designates first key Bryde’s whale habitat off Weizhou Island
China has designated 335.43 square kilometers of sea off Weizhou Island in Guangxi as its first key habitat for Bryde’s whales, with fishing prohibited for 8.5 months each year. The Agriculture Ministry said the move fills a gap in coastal whale-habitat protection and is expected to benefit marine biodiversity and fisheries ecosystems. Researchers have identified more than 70 individual whales there since monitoring began in 2018.
