PoliticsMerz says Germany and EU will not follow Trump on Russian diesel, urges tougher sanctions

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Germany and the EU would not make a diesel-supply deal with Russia, arguing Moscow negotiates seriously only under pressure. He said Russia answered Donald Trump’s energy-ceasefire proposal with new strikes on Ukrainian civilian and energy infrastructure, and called for tighter sanctions while pledging continued support for Kyiv. Green Party co-leader Franziska Brantner also denounced Trump’s deal. Merz renewed a promise to lower Germany’s electricity tax to the EU minimum.
