EconomyExpert says global grain prices will keep rising if Black Sea tensions escalate
Evgeny Karabanov of the Grain Union of Kazakhstan said Black Sea countries account for about 40% of global wheat trade. Wheat prices have climbed 20-30% over the past three months amid Black Sea tensions and droughts in Europe and the US. Further prolonged escalation could push grain prices higher and put wheat-importing poor countries in a difficult economic position. Kazakhstan exported a record 14.7 million tons of wheat and processed products in the previous marketing year; alternative routes through Georgia’s Poti port and Baltic ports would be significantly more expensive and uncompetitive.
