The World Meteorological Organization expects El Niño to intensify before peaking in December and says it could be among the strongest since at least 1950. It may bring above-average temperatures and shift rainfall patterns across much of the world, increasing drought and flood risks; drought has already harmed crops and wildlife in parts of Central America.
