World Migratory Bird Day falls on October 10, with this year’s theme highlighting the value of every bird and public observation. Sightings help scientists track migration routes, monitor populations and identify habitats needing protection. China has 1,505 bird species, more than 800 of them migratory; a January 2026 survey counted 6.324 million wintering waterbirds, 81.8% within protected areas. This year also marks 60 years of the International Waterbird Census.
