A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck southern Panama, prompting tsunami warnings across Central and South America. The US National Weather Service issued warnings for Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Nicaragua and Guatemala, while Chile’s naval hydrographic service also issued one. The quake was centred about 10km southwest of Pitaloza Arriba. Residents reported strong shaking in Panama City, and damage was reported in Penonome. Panama ordered schools closed.
