A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Panama, damaging buildings and prompting a wide-ranging tsunami warning for neighbouring countries. The US Geological Survey said about 4.6 million people felt moderate to severe shaking and that effects were likely to be widespread. The epicentre was near Pitaloza Arriba in south-central Panama, at a depth of 12km. Buildings in Panama City, including a maternity ward, were evacuated; the extent of damage and any casualties remain unclear.
