PoliticsBolsonaro wins first round of Brazilian presidential election as Trump-backed candidates extend red wave

Senator Flavio Bolsonaro won Brazil’s first presidential election round with 47.2% of the vote against incumbent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s 44.9%. They will meet again on October 25. Bolsonaro’s strong margins in several southern states far exceeded most polling expectations, giving Brazil’s right further ammunition to allege that pollsters favor Lula and his Workers Party.
