SocietySpain: Massive protests after housing bills voted down

Organizers estimated that 500,000 people marched in Madrid for affordable housing, with similar demonstrations in about 50 other Spanish cities. The protests followed parliament’s rejection of two emergency bills supporting renters and limiting evictions, and continued a week-long wave of actions sparked by the eviction of 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascalin. Police used tear gas and rubber bullets in Valencia.
