Protests are taking place across Spain after parliament rejected the minority government’s emergency housing measures. Around 50 marches were planned in cities including Madrid, Valencia and Barcelona, with demonstrators demanding lower rents, an end to evictions and restrictions on investment funds buying residential property. The defeat has also fuelled speculation that Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez could call an early election.
