PoliticsAlgeria’s lower house passes death penalty bill for forest arsonists
Algeria’s lower house approved a penal-code amendment allowing the death penalty for people convicted of arson and acts deemed to threaten public security, unity or economic and environmental stability. Human rights groups called the measure a retrograde response and accused the government of using it against political opposition. The bill still requires upper-house review and ratification by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
