Russian Minister of Far East and Arctic Development Alexey Chekunkov said explored mineral resources in the Arctic are valued at more than $20 trillion. Subsurface users estimate that no more than 20% has been explored; extrapolating those figures would put Russian Arctic capitalization at at least $100 trillion. The region accounts for major shares of nickel, rare-earth metals, platinum-group metals, phosphates and natural gas production.
