SocietyEthiopia's last Jews dream of a visa for Israel
Ethiopia is home to one of the world’s oldest Jewish communities, believed in legend to descend from the Queen of Sheba and King Solomon in 950 BC. The Beta Israel community faced persecution under the communist regime from the 1970s to the 1990s. Israel airlifted more than 20,000 Ethiopian Jews in Operations Moses and Solomon, but several thousand remained behind and now hope for visas to Israel.
