ScienceEl Niño is a ‘postcard from the future’ and could cause 451,000 excess heat deaths
Researchers estimate that unusually high temperatures linked to the current El Niño could cause around 451,000 excess deaths worldwide from June 2026 to February 2027. The Climate Impact Lab says the event resembles warming projected to become normal within 20 years, while deaths from related droughts, floods and other indirect effects are not included and the final toll is expected to be higher.
