WorldWatch: Evan Gershkovich describes being detained by Russian agents
US journalist Evan Gershkovich tells the BBC’s Today programme about the 16 months he spent detained in Russia. He said masked men surrounding him at a restaurant in March 2023 made him realise he had been “lured into a trap”. He was later sentenced to 16 years on espionage charges, then released in a 2024 prisoner exchange. Gershkovich and the Wall Street Journal have maintained that the charges were false.
