CultureSichuan's Largest Grotto Complex

The Thousand-Buddha Cliff in Guangyuan, on the east bank of the Jialing River, began receiving carvings in the late Northern Wei period and flourished during the Tang Dynasty. With more than 7,900 statues, it is Sichuan's largest grotto complex. In 1939, Liang Sicheng and Liu Dunzhen helped preserve it after finding that a highway beneath the cliff endangered the carvings.
