A BIS working paper found that USDT issuance on Ethereum increased through 2024 without a sustained rise in balances held by smart-contract accounts. Their share exceeded 20% during parts of 2021 and 2022, then fell to roughly 10%–15% by late 2024. The shift in proportion alone does not prove that funds left DeFi.
