Political scientist Alexander Kynev was allegedly badly beaten when detained on suspicion of attempting to distribute drugs, according to the human rights project Slovo Zashchite. He was hospitalized at Moscow’s Matrosskaya Tishina detention center after doctors found two shinbone fractures. Slovo Zashchite called the injuries torture, while the Federal Penitentiary Service investigates. Kynev denies the drug charge.
