The Council of Europe has awarded its 2026 Václav Havel Human Rights Prize to Iranian lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh for her longstanding defense of human rights. She has campaigned for women’s and political prisoners’ rights and against compulsory hijab laws and the death penalty, despite repeated arrests, lengthy imprisonment and personal risk.
