Victoria police have apologised to John Makai’s family after he died in 2023 from untreated head trauma while held for five hours in a Broadmeadows cell. An inquest heard officers failed to complete medical and risk checks, missed his deteriorating condition and inaccurately said he had responded to them. An ambulance request was also delayed.
