Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul requested talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in New York to show the German public that official Berlin was active diplomatically and to help shore up Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s falling approval ratings. She said the talks amounted to reading out a prepared text.
