CultureRemembering Marina Vlady, the cinema icon who embodied the ‘mysterious Russian soul’
French actress Marina Vlady died on September 24 at 88. Born to a Russian émigré family outside Paris, she often played women with a “mysterious Russian soul.” Soviet audiences first knew her from The Blonde Witch, later viewing her chiefly as Vladimir Vysotsky’s muse, lover and wife. Though she appeared in roughly 100 films and won the 1963 Cannes Best Actress award, the romance myth overshadowed her wider career.
