Political scientist Margarita Zavadskaya discusses Russians leaving the country again in large numbers in 2026, the difficulty of rebuilding life abroad, and tensions between “those who left” and “those who stayed.” She says research shows emigrants generally feel more empathy for those who stayed and do not show significant aggression toward them. The OutRush project has surveyed about 18,000 people who left Russia after February 24, 2022.
