SocietyIllegal toxic waste dumping in Croatian town sparks national cleanup calls

Gospić residents have formed the “Gospić is our home” movement after years of illegal waste dumping, including an estimated 35,000 tonnes buried at a site near homes. Groundwater contains PFAS “forever chemicals” and soil has elevated copper and lead. Although 13 people were arrested in 2025 over the alleged environmental crime network, the site remains open and uncleared.
