WorldIsrael faces water shortages after Gaza wastewater destruction fuels algae bloom

Five of Israel’s six main desalination plants were shut for days or forced to operate at reduced capacity after an exceptional algae bloom clogged their filters. Scientists say the bloom was triggered by untreated sewage released after Israeli attacks destroyed much of Gaza’s wastewater infrastructure. Gaza’s five treatment plants are out of service, sending an estimated 45,000 cubic metres of sewage into the Mediterranean each day.
