Researchers at the University of Chicago’s Climate Impact Lab estimate that extreme heat associated with this year’s “super El Niño” could cause up to 451,000 excess deaths worldwide in the six months through February 2027. Extremely hot days are expected to increase by 44%, with Nigeria, Indonesia and Sudan among the hardest-hit countries. The effects could last longer than the study period.
