Riot police used teargas and baton charges against hundreds of protesters who tried to block the eviction of Maricarmen, an 87-year-old disabled woman who had lived in her Madrid apartment for 71 years. The eviction was eventually carried out after a developer bought the building and raised her rent beyond her pension. Housing campaigners called the landlord’s conduct “barbaric”.
