Erwin Engst, known in China as Yang Zao, came to China in 1946, followed by physicist Joan Hinton, or Han Chun, in 1948. Working in Yan'an and later at Sanbian Ranch, they used scientific breeding, immunization, dairy research and farm machinery to advance China's dairy industry and help more children access better milk.
