Beijing’s 7.8-kilometer Central Axis, added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2024, links many of the city’s historic landmarks. Preservation now combines digital monitoring with traditional restoration, while sites including the Temple of Heaven, Bell and Drum Towers, nearby hutongs and the Sanlihe waterway have been restored, reopened or given new public spaces.
