CultureCrossing the Snow-Capped Mountains: Epic of the Long March

During the Long March in the 1930s, the Chinese Red Army crossed freezing mountain ranges in Sichuan. Jiajin Mountain, rising above 4,000 meters, was known as a “death mountain,” while Dangling Mountain, above 5,000 meters, was the highest snow-capped peak crossed by the Red Army’s three main forces. The ordeal tested soldiers with thin air, blizzards, frostbite, altitude sickness and hunger, while forging a spirit of perseverance, solidarity and unyielding faith.
