PoliticsAfD gains in state elections but has no path to government

The far-right Alternative for Germany made substantial gains in elections in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Berlin, but is expected to remain in opposition in both states. An exit poll put the AfD at 37.9% in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, narrowly ahead of the SPD at 35.7%; it won 16.2% in Berlin. Other parties appear unwilling to form coalitions with it.
