HealthSummer 2026 broke European heat records and caused deaths

June to August 2026 was Europe’s warmest summer since records began, surpassing 2003. Germany recorded an unprecedented number of hot days, and at least 16,300 heat-related deaths were estimated by the end of August. The estimate links mortality data with temperatures and includes deaths associated with heat-worsened health conditions.
