CultureOktoberfest opens as crowds race for the best beer-tent spots

Thousands of visitors rushed into Munich’s Oktoberfest grounds after the gates opened, with some spending the night outside to secure prime seats in the beer tents. The official opening ceremony takes place at midday, when Munich Mayor Dominik Krause is due to tap the first keg. More than 6 million people are expected at the 16-day festival, which runs until October 4.
